I've been a long time Verizon customer, but after the announcement of the iPhone 3GS I couldn't sit and wait any longer for Verizon to release halfway decent phones with Wifi and unlocked GPS (not that I don't love my BBerry, it's just that the iPhone is a much smarter smart phone with fewer restrictions), so I ordered the 3GS the day it was announced.

Here is my question. When I ordered the phone to be shipped to me on Apple.com, I provided my Verizon Wireless phone number to be ported over to ATT. I have since decided that I'd like to keep my Verizon account active while I try out ATT's service in case there are any catastrophic service holes in areas where I absolutely need service. How would I activate the phone with a new number? Do I have to go into ATT or can I choose to have a new number assigned to me in iTunes? If I decide that I'm going to keep the iPhone and ATT service, what would be the necessary steps to port over my Verizon number at that point?

Thanks

I did this when I first got an iphone in 2007. Wanted to keep my verizon number for a bit longer, so I got a new number on AT&T, and when I decided I was happy, I had them port over my verizon number. It was no trouble.

However, since you already told them you were porting your verizon number, I HIGHLY suggest you call AT&T asap to explain the situation and stop the port from happening. Don't try to do this through itunes or whatever - call, or better yet, go to an AT&T retail store and deal with someone in person. I'm sure they can arrange this for you, but actually talk to an AT&T rep to cancel your request to port the number.

Thanks QCassidy. That's probably the best idea. I'll head over to an ATT store today after work to explain the situation.
