I switched carriers to Verizon and ordered my new iPhone 11 through Verizon's telesales. The order confirmation e-mail I originally got contained instructions for activating the phone using a QR code, which I believe is for the eSIM.

However when I received my phone and turned it on, I did not see an obvious way to scan the QR code, per the order confirmation e-mail. The phone then apparently activated with the physical Verizon SIM that was pre-installed in the phone.

The eSIM thing is new to me, and I want to switch to the eSIM so I can use the physical SIM slot for service from another carrier (if traveling overseas, for example) once Verizon unlocks the phone after 60 days.

Questions:
  • The initial iOS setup did not have an obvious way to scan the QR code, so how would I have even followed the instructions from the e-mail to scan the code and activate the eSIM, if merely the act of turning on the phone would initiate activation on the physical SIM?
  • Is it possible to switch from the physical SIM to the eSIM for my Verizon service?

I don't know the answer to your first question.

You can switch over to an eSIM from a physical SIM. I did it through the chat feature on Verizon's website. Just tell them that you would like to transfer the service onto your eSIM. It takes about 10 minutes. I transferred my service to eSIM for overseas purposes.
