so my question is.. if i do the esn swap to keep the unlimited from another line on my account.. can i still signup for verizon insurance or only applecare? i need loss and theft protection which applecare does not provide

You can still get Verizon insurance.

you are going to have to visit or call verizon to get the insurance. That would be a perfect question for them.
However, the insurance is based on the designated line and the registered device on the line.
