Does anyone know if the verizon iPad only works in 3G areas or does it work in 1x data areas too. ATT iPad clearly states that it works on edge when 3G isn't available.

Yes, 1X will work. Apple's website states that it will work on Edge because Edge is part of their data network. Verizon doesn't have an equivalent to an Edge network. 1X data is GPRS, which AT&T also has. So on Verizon it's either 3G, GPRS or no data. AT&T is 3G, Edge, GPRS or no data.

I finally know what that "o" symbol I saw once means.
