I want to get my mom an iPhone 4, we just switched to Verizon so she is using a confusing free phone as of right now, but Id like to get her an iPhone 4 from Craigslist. Now if I want to activate it onto the Verizon network will she have to get the data plan?

man even if you buy it off the market? you its mandatory for all smart phones on their network to have data plans? they are just milking us
It's the same way for AT&T. I still have my contract with them, and even though my 3GS is sold, it is still linked to my account so I can't remove the data plan until I activate a dummy phone on it. Unfortunately, that's just the way cell providers are nowadays.
