Verizon iPhone 5 activation for unlock use

I purchased a Verizon iPhone 5 from the Apple store online for pickup because I wanted to have an unlocked phone. They activated the phone at the store but the box is still sealed. I plan on cancelling the plan and paying the etf. Do I need to open the box and connect via wifi to complete a full activation to use the phone as an unlocked device? I don't want to open the box unless I have to since I am planning this as a gift.

From what I understand, yes. The unlock only takes place when it is activated through iTunes.
