I just bought a Verizon iPhone 5 without contract, so do I have to activate it with Verizon to use it on straight talk?

How do you not activate it with verizon? I thought Verizon phones did not use SIM cards and therefore were locked to the carrier that they were purchased on.

Verizon phones do use sim cards for years now.
Some use the sims for international use only when outside the US and the new LTE verizon phones need a sim to connect to verizons 4G LTE network.
The verizon iphone 5 is officially unlocked for GSM use. So even if under contract or purchased full price it will work and activate fine with any GSM sim inside without ever having to activate it on verizon at all.
Search on google, plenty of articles and even verizon confirming that.
