Hey everyone, I'm new to this site but it seems like a great place. I've searched the forums for answers to this question, but nothing addresses it specifically.
I've got an iPhone 4 with Verizon and am due for an upgrade. I was originally planning on ditching my postpaid contact and going prepaid, because the Share Everything Plan would cost me $100/m. However, when i went to do this Big Red made me a great offer, for arguments sake lets say I'd get the same (mins/text/data) as prepaid, but obviously with the luxury of a subsidized phone.
Here's the caveat: I might be moving to UK in 6 months. So, I'm stuck with the dilemma of whether to upgrade or not. If I do, I'll get the subsidized phone, but have to pay the ETF of about $290 ($350 - 6 months of $10). I'll then have to see if the phone will work over there.
I've researched quite a bit into it (two great sites being http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/iphone/iphone-faq/differences-between-iphone-5s-models.html and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_LTE_networks) and it looks like the Verizon iPhone 5S will work perfectly over there on UK GSM, 2G, 3G and 4G bands. The only band missing from the Verizon model (that's in the UK model) is band 7 (2600 Mhz), but that looks like it isn't in use yet from what I can see. Although I've heard that the iPhone 5S is unlocked out of the box, I'm worried that it won't work for some reason, or not connect to 3G or something.
The other caveat is that I might just go over for a few months, in which case I'd freeze my verizon account instead of ending it. However, with my phone still being 'under contract' and my plan frozen, would that cause any issues with using it in UK with a UK sim?
Does anyone have any experience in this? Or any recommendations? If I end up moving to UK, I might kick myself for getting the US phone. But if I go onto prepaid and end up staying in US, I might kick myself for not taking the great postpaid contract offer. If I went prepaid I'd get an iPhone 4S off ebay.
Thanks everyone.
Andy
