Verizon iphone and sim card

I konw AT&T phones have always had a Sim card, but now, apparently, the VZN iphone 5 does too. What exactly is it there for? Any use if one does not travel abroad?

I asked the Verizon rep at the store and he said Verizon uses the SIM for LTE. I have no idea if he was correct or not.
