Verizon iPhone and "world phone capabilities."

I currently have a Verizon iPhone 4 and I am still debating on whether or not I will be picking up the 4S this coming Friday.

Question about the SIM card slot; if I am traveling to the UK/Germany/France, etc. from the United States, how do I get my iPhone 4S to have service over there?

Verizon provides you a global SIM when you contact them about it. I don't think you can pop in your own SIM that you get from another carrier.

CDMA technology is pretty closed, so you need to go to Verizon for any needs. It'd be great if you could just swap and hop on a different network.

Verizon said they will be unlocking the SIM slot like other Verizon world phones. I'm not sure how other Verizon world phones work though, so you may have to pay for that.

Any more info you have on this? I've never had a Verizon global phone. I'd be really, really curious if it was unlocked as that would 'change everything'. Because then I'd just swap in a pre-paid SIM when traveling overseas.
