Sure, that was the whole point. Apple's competitors got their friends in the media to hype it, and hype it they did.

This always happens when a new model of the iPhone comes out. Just wait until the next version is released later this year. A new media frenzy will be generated by, well, whatever they decide to hype at that time, but they'll think of something. That's how the PR game is played.
