Hey everyone and Merry Christmas. I need some help.

I bought a Verizon iPhone 6s off of my friend for Christmas. He unpaired his iCloud and turned off find my iPhone.

I gave it to my brother who currently have Tmobile. An iPhone SE. We took that SIM card and put it in the iPhone 6s and it’s not working.

This comes up

The SIM card that you currently have installed in this iPhone is from a carrier that is not supported under the activation policy that is currently assigned by the activation server. This is not a hardware issue with the iPhone. Please insert another SIM card from a supported carrier or request that this iPhone be unlocked by your carrier. Please contact Apple for more information."

I contacted Apple and they say it shows the phone is unlocked. I contacted Verizon and they told me they don’t lock iPhones.

Apple suggested I clean install and update from iTunes. I had to hold the power button and home button to get to the menu.

In the end it did all that and the same thing came up. Not only on the phone but on iTunes.

I have no clue what to do anymore and it’s ruining the gift today.

Thanks for the help

The Verizon iPhone 6s is unlocked, so that is correct there. I wonder if there's an issue with the activation servers since a lot of people are probably getting new phones and trying to activate those. I would try to erase all settings again and go through the initial setup again. Here are some Apple articles on how to do that.

1. From the device itself: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201274
2. Using iTunes: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201252

After you do either of those options, it should go through the new setup on the iPhone requiring a SIM to activate the phone. At this point put the T-Mobile SIM card in to see if that works.

Yeah I’ve been through that point a few times and have reset and restored like 4 times and am still getting that every single time.

I have mine in my iPhone X and don’t really wanna take it out and try.

The 6s is not prepaid. It’s paid off though. The Tmobile sim is prepaid but that shouldn’t matter. I have bought iPhones on Tmobile and just popped in the sim no problem into them. Tmobile told me that wouldn’t be an issue either

Unfortunately Verizon isn’t open right now due to Christmas and I’ve been dealing with their chat teams who are zero help.

Just to confirm, you're receiving the following message when you try to get past the activation part of the initial setup on the phone right?

"The SIM card that you currently have installed in this iPhone is from a carrier that is not supported under the activation policy that is currently assigned by the activation server. This is not a hardware issue with the iPhone. Please insert another SIM card from a supported carrier or request that this iPhone be unlocked by your carrier. Even though you were told the T-Mobile pre-paid SIM wouldn't cause that, it sounds like that may be the problem. I am guessing your brother's prepaid service with T-Mobile is currently tied to a different phone? If that is the case, that may explain the current problem. Sounds like you just need to get things updated with his account tomorrow.

With prepaid, you can take out the sim and put it in any other phone and it works no problem. Tmobile phones that is. I just gotta get Verizon on the phone tomorrow and see what’s going on

Where did your friend originally get the device? Even though it's a CDMA model it might not have been activated originally with (post-paid) Verizon and thus might be locked in some fashion.

And you know what really annoys me. In the top left corner it shows LTE and full service, yet I still get the sim not supported thing

UPDATE:

Not gonna believe this one. The box my friend gave me the phone in was FOR A DIFFERENT PHONE. Not his. The Apple tech told me to check the imei on the SIM card tray and it was different

Come to find out. ITS LOCKED ON SPRINT not even Verizon AND NEEDS TO BE UNLOCKED.

Sigh. Let’s try again tomorrow. What a day lmao

Sounds like what I brought up as a possibility earlier.

That is to be expected.

Sorry, I don't understand what you're trying to add to my post. After you reset an iPhone to factory settings when you go through the initial setup it does go through an activation which you should be able to activate it with any SIM card as long as the iPhone is unlocked. Is this what you're saying is to be expected?
