Verizon today began offering a free six-month Apple News+ subscription with the purchase and activation of a cellular iPad with a data plan.

The promotion applies to the purchase of any cellular iPad, iPad Pro, iPad Air, or iPad mini through January 15, 2021 in the United States. Those who have never subscribed to Apple News+ will receive six months of free access, while users that have already taken advantage of Apple's standard one-month trial will receive five months free.

For those not interested in purchasing an iPad, Best Buy is also offering a free four-month subscription to Apple News+ in the United States, with the only requirement being a free Best Buy account. This offer is available to first-time subscribers only, but previous trial users can still receive an additional three months of free access.

Apple News gained several new features alongside the release of iOS 13.6 and macOS 10.15.6 this week, including audio versions of select stories for News+ subscribers, a daily audio news briefing podcast hosted by Apple News editors, and curated local news collections starting in the San Francisco Bay Area, Houston, Los Angeles, and New York City.

Verizon's plan to offer a free six months of Apple News+ was first reported by 9to5Mac and the promotion is now live.

You're buying an iPad because you want an iPad. You'd choose to get it from Verizon because they'll give you six months of free Apple News Plus whereas other retailed will give you nothing with your purchase.
Eh, I bought mine from Best Buy because it was several hundred dollars off at the time - I weigh that quite a bit higher than Apple News+.

Make it 5 years free. Still no one will care.

I don’t mean to be snarky, but it’s a flawed idea compounded by a bad app. Only way News+ survives is as a bundle, bring in the major publishers, and make the app not suck.

With Best Buy offering four months of Apple News+ for free and now this, Apple must be hurting for subscribers. Which I'm not totally shocked about.

With so much free news sources, this would not be an enticing offer. Maybe free health care for 6 months or 6 months of free groceries or bus or light rail tickets would be more enticing.

who would buy an iPad from a carrier in order to get News+? I can curate my own news and information, thanks.
You really think this deal is about buying something you don't need just to get News+ for free?

Have you never gotten a freebie with something that you bought? That's what this is...

Despite you owning a dozen Apple products, you DO know that News+ is more than just news?

This is nonsense. I buy from Verizon because they offer the best reception in the place where I live and the places where I travel (used to travel before Covid).

Right on!

Also right on.
I can barely tolerate the free news.
Just my opinion, but as I see it, the free news in the app is 95% on one political side, and that includes the so-called "non-politicial" options. I want options on all sides, but the people who currently curate are blind to any possibilities outside of their personal worldviews.

Even the tech news available in the app seems to have had anything of a middle-road or conservative direction completely purged.

Again, just my opinion, but this is why I don't have television, because it's the same way. This is why I only buy one newspaper (it's a business paper without so-called sports or lifestyle sections).

You can't remove half of my options (or not provide them in the first place) and expect me to pay anyway. I can still find everything I want on the internet, in podcasts, or on You Tube; it's all just a day late. I get what I want to read, watch, and hear, and I can skip past commercials and even binge if I want to. And it's free.
