I bought an iPhone on launch day but didn't port my number at the time because I knew my contract wasn't up yet. My number is currently part of a family plan with four other people on it. When my dad called up and asked about the state of my number, they told him the contract was up in about two weeks. When I called earlier to find out the exact date, they told me the contract is actually up in early November, and my dad apparently accidentally gave my brother's number earlier. Now I'm faced with either a $175 ETF or waiting out the contract.

Does anyone know of a way of porting a number without terminating the contract? I think I remember reading at some point about someone porting their number but immediately having a new number generated for the contract, does anyone know of anything like that being possible? I know getting a new number is possible in and of itself.
