Verizon Upgrade Fee Question

Does Verizon's upgrade fee only apply to existing customers? I just switched from Sprint to Verizon, started a contract this month, and brought my own phone with me, so I could wait and get the iPhone at the subsidized price. If I go to the store tomorrow, will I have to pay the upgrade fee, or is it only applied to existing customers who are upgrading?

I called Verizon about adding a line and they said there would be an activation fee. I don't think you are going to get out of some sort of fee.
