Verizon Upgrade Question

I am a current Blackberry owner, and I have been due for a "new every two" upgrade since August. I've been waiting for the new Iphone to upgrade. Since I'm on Verizon, do I have to do the pre-order from Verizon (via either phone or website) or can I do it through Apple and still have it connect to my current account?

I'm planning on doing it at 12am PT.
