Does the iPhone 12s need an update to utilize verizons 5g nationwide network like my Samsung fold 2 just got?

I’m sure they do! I’m in a 5G Nationwide area and LTE is displaying. Verizon and Apple are clueless. After spending 3 hours on the phone and chat with Verizon, I gave up for now. Also, the speeds for 5G compared to LTE will be minimal. You see a huge boost with 5G UW, which is hardly anywhere to be found.

Same here. Those that get the 5G icon are really, really lucky (👍) they have that displayed. i’ve driven right under a Verizon 5G tower and I still don’t get the damn 5G icon. That’s Verizon. As stated, Verizon is clueless as to why. I even returned to my old data plan with 5G Nationwide from the newer unlimited plan thinking that this may have something to do with it, but it didn’t.

Sure sounds like Verizon needs to push out a carrier update! They are not my favorite people right now. 💩

I’m getting the 5G icon all the time but speeds are very comparable to LTE. It’s slightly faster in certain areas than LTE was but nothing to get excited about. I’m on the original unlimited plan so I may upgrade to the new one that can access UW to see if it’s better.

I live literally right next to a Verizon cell phone tower and get 5G when I am at home. If I go anywhere though, it switches back to 4G.

Verizon gets a big old "meh" from me. When people are touting the life-changing 5G they're really talking about Ultra Wideband which is available on select street corners in America. For me, every 5G vs LTE test I've done in my area (two larger cities in FL and suburbs) the 5G is noticeably slower on both or, in one instance, much slower on download, but a bit higher on upload.

Given the battery drain, 5G is a major regression for my uses. Where I think non UW 5G will shine is when it gets more efficient and replaces LTE because I believe it is supposed to have greater bandwidth meaning that once all of America is on 5G it won't slow to a crawl like LTE does.
