Versions could be really cool, but like many features in Lion apple implemented it horribly.

Versions should work like undo/redo. It has your history of changes just like undo redo, but can display them graphically like version does. IF the user chooses to save the document, then that undo history can be saved with the document at that time... no need to lock/unlock the file.

Of course, the whole thing should be OPTIONAL, even with this implementation. I really don't understand how the people at Apple responsible for making this decision thought that the option to turn it on or off was too much, but needing to lock and unlock all your files depending on how long it was since you worked on them was okay...
