Vertical videos in YouTube

I could have sworn vertical videos would play full screen within the YouTube app, they do from the website on the phone.

Is something wrong on my end? Are you able to view a vertical video in full screen or does it rotate to horizontal and still have the black on either side?

Running ios11.1 bets, if that matters.

I don't use the YouTube app; I use the website.

What if you double-tap the video while it's playing. Does that make it full screen?
