Vertical White Lines on iMac

Hello all, first time poster here.

My year and a few months old intel iMac has two vertical white lines on the screen. One about an inch and a bit from the center, and the other about the 3rd row of pixels in. The line goes from the top of the monitor to the bottom.
I noticed the first one about a month ago, and another one has come this week.

I only had the one year warranty. Doh.

I have contacted an store than can deal with apple repairs, and they quoted me £400 to £500 just to replace the screen.

I haven't contacted Apple at this point.

Anyone else had this problem? and what should be my next step?

If it's exactly one pixel wide, that's probably a hardware problem. You could try booting from the install DVD to make sure it shows up there, and/or run the hardware test that came with it to see if it gives you any more detail.

Assuming it's hardware, you're kind of out of luck--that is NOT a common problem, but it does happen, and when it does really the only thing you can do is replace the broken part (which would likely be the screen).
