Is there a way to have Safari open links in a new tab instead of a new window? For example, clicking on a link on digg.com will open the link in a new window. I'd rather have it open in a new tab.

I know I can hold down Command while clicking, but I don't want to have to do that.

safari >>preferences >> Tabs >> command click to open a new tab

All this does is change how you can open a link in a new tab, it doesn't make all links automatically open in a new tab.

It seems bizarre that they haven't given an option for automatic opening in tabs. It's also quite annoying having to press cmd all the time (I realise this is horrifically lazy).

I am trying to learn to love Safari because I like how it integrates better with OSX and iLife, but I'm finding myself more inclined to go back to Firefox.

Indeed. Especially when The Greatest Browser On The Planet does it by default. That's to be expected, though.

open terminal and copy this command in there. then restart safari.

defaults write com.apple.Safari TargetedClicksCreateTabs -bool true

Thank you very much everyone for your suggestions, but I hereby declare bigjnyc as the winrar.
