Very Basics of Software Operations i.e. iPhoto

Hi,

Sorry to keep bothering you guys, but i'm still playing around with my new macbook and as usual looking for quick answers. Take something like iPhoto for example just to get an idea of photo editing software. When you import something to iPhoto from an external hard drive, does it make a copy to the external one? If not, do i have to be careful about making changes to the original? I noticed that iPhoto doesn't allow you to save changes and i always want to keep the original.
