It doesn't happen when the machine is moved, as is said by others, and it happens so sporadically that it is about impossible to reproduce. Sometimes the machine goes days without making the sound.

Seems to happen most often, though, when the machine is hot or the fans are running. It sounds like a singular, non-repetitive "tick" or clicking sound.

No performance issues whatsoever, and everything seems to be working in fire order. Fans work and turn on, machine doesn't get too hot, and other than that very rare sound, the machine is dead silent during normal tasks.

Any ideas of what it may be?

I'm getting this too on a 2011 15" MBP. Exactly the same - can't reproduce it so can't figure it out. Happens very infrequently. Almost sounds like an internal static discharging through the speaker or something. I think I started a thread about it once a while ago but got no replies.

It is weird, but going on a while for me now with no other ill effects

If you had an HDD, I would think that the click would most likely come from that. Since you have an SSD (which have no moving parts), it seems more likely that I have your laptops "issue" (if it deserves to be called that) and vice versa.

Could it be a metal expansion/contraction tick? My cars engine ticks when its cooling down

I still have this issue. When i removed the bottom cover the sound went away. My best guess is the fan is rubbing against the cover
