Greetings,

I'll try to keep this as short as possible. For about a month now, I've had my 13" Macbook hooked up to an external monitor using a mini-DVI cable. Everything has been functioning fine until today.

Whenever I unplug the laptop from the external display, the Macbook will not recognize any clicks from either the trackpad or my Magic Mouse. I can move the cursor around using both; however, I cannot click anything. Hooking the laptop back up to the external monitor does not remedy the situation. When I boot the laptop up by itself, I can only move the cursor around – I cannot click anything. The only way I can get it working again is if I shutdown the laptop, hook it up to the external monitor, and boot it up. It's almost as if my laptop needs the external monitor to recognize any clicking from my mouse or trackpad.

My Apple Care plan still has a good year on it, so after calling Apple Support, I've been referred to a local shop that can attempt to repair it, but I was wondering if anyone might be able to give any insight? I've tried rebooting (of course), restarting in safe mode, resetting the PRAM, and cleaning up my system using OnyX. It's just a bit frustrating because my laptop has basically become a desktop for the time being. I'm not sure if the licensed repair shop will be able to fix the issue without being able to click anything.

Thanks in advance for any replies.
