Hello all!
Computer: Early 2009 20" iMac.
Today I experienced a very short (1-2 sec) high pitched squeal/beep from my iMac. The sound did not come out of the speakers or the headphones connected to the sound output, but from the computer itself. It was a very brief sound and was almost similar to when you connect a guitar to an already turned on amplifier - but more intense. When the sound occured I was not doing anything performance heavy or anything that in any way should suggest that the computer was under strain in some way.
Nothing seems to have changed (though havent turned off the computer since) and I'm hoping it's just random occurence... but random weird things only happens to PC's in my experience - never on Macs!
My first thought was that it was the harddrive malfunctioning in some way, so I have made a backup for now, just in case. This computer has never had any problems during it's lifetime - it has crashed only once in three years time and never frozen or anything, so no previous humbug whatsoever.
I did google this issue and I found mostly threads about similar things happening to MacBooks and that in most cases it was the fans that were fooling around due to dust and whatnot, not much information about this issue on iMacs. I am however, completely sure that this has nothing to do with fans.
Has anyone experienced this themselves or have any idea what it might be?
P.S. I don't have any warranty left on this machine and I plan to purchase a new 2012 iMac as soon as they are released and then sell this machine on ebay.
