Stuck in the middle with you
I have an ethernet cable running from my router to my computer in the basement, rigged haphazardly through a small hole I drilled in the floor. What is the cheapest way to take this cable and split it into two so that I can run my computer and tivo down there without drilling another hole in the floor?

Mod note: Moved thread to Mac Basics, I know it's not really Mac-related but you'll probably get more replies than in Community :)

You need to buy a wired router or a switch. The ethernet cord that you've run through the hole plugs into the router. You can then plug in as many ethernet cables into that as there are ports.

And having a router down there won't conflict with the router my roommate already has upstairs (the one that connects to the WAN)?

No, but you have to set it up as an extender, so it's a bit more complicated.
