Very slow internet over VPN-Iphone4

Hi,

I am using a VPN connection to use the BBC Iplayer however on my 3mb Adsl connection i am only receiving about 250kbps when using VPN making it impossible to use. Same VPN system on desktop and laptop is giving me 2.5mbs without any problem. Any ideas?
