...or maybe it's my ignorance that is making it strange. I have an external hd cloned from my other imac that I plan to eventually install in the imac I am using now. But no matter how I try (setting it from settings, from the start up menu via the option key) I can boot from the external drive (fw) I go to about this mac and it shows it as a start up disk, but the desktop and applications are NOT from it, they are simply from the internal disk, as seems to be all the system...
I have sl in both with all the updates...
This is so mind boggling, and frankly very annoying, because I absolutely love the boot from external hd feature...

Update: it appears that my external hard disk is actually a sandboxed (superduper users will know what this is - it's essentially the whole system minus user files) clone, but not quite because most applications are aliases instead, of course the user folder is an alias to the user folder...phhhh...this is so strange...
p.s.1 btw I have searched the web a lot for this, but to no avail...
ps 2, actually the system does indeed seem to be the one on the external disk, as some updates I have already installed in the internal disk, are now available to download when booting from the external.
