Very strange OS bug (panther)

So I was just doing normal stuff--web, email, etc.-- and all of a sudden everything started rendering with missing letters. Very strange. Safari, mail, and finder were all affected. It's not a big deal as it still knew what the missing letters were, but I have never seen anything like this before. A reboot solved the problem so far, just thought I would share the strangeness.

Well Im impressed never seen that happen, could be a problem with the font cache but probably won't know since you say it has fixed itself.
