i have a bricked iPhone 4s that I use just for music and photos. It’s always in Airplane mode so it can’t be searching for towers. I’ve been using it for the last five years to take pictures when I go hiking in the Olympic Mountains. There are no battery issues except when I hike up to Marmot Pass via the Big Quilcene River Trail, which I usually do twice every summer. For some reason the battery drains down. Not every time I hike this trail but it seems like about half of the time.

This time it was completely drained just half way to Marmot Pass or less than two hours on the trail. My working cell phone has no problems and no one I’ve met on the trail experiences this issue. I carry the iPhone 4S by itself in my left lower shorts pocket and the working cell phone in my right lower shorts pocket. No other electronics on me.

All I can think is that there is something in the mountains in this area that is specifically effecting the 4s. Below Marmot Pass, much further down the trail is the abandoned Tubal Cain Mines which I believe contains magnesium ore and probably still does.

I have in the past turned off my iPhone 4s except when taking pictures when I noticed the battery losing juice farther up the trail where there are good views to shoot. This time it drained much faster. Pissed me off!

Any other theories?

Most modern gadgets use Li-Ion batteries. If something affects the 4s battery, then it should also affect other Li-ion based gadgets.

I think you need to gather more data to come up with a conclusion.
