VGA adapter for iPad?

I know some people are upset that this doesn't allow you to mirror the iPad's screen on a TV, but I'm not really interested in that. I have a lot of movies and TV shows in 720p on my iPad and when I have family and friends over, it's often easier to watch it on a big screen TV than to crowd around the iPad. I know the VGA adapter will allow me to do this, but my question is will the picture quality be in HD and will it look as good as the Apple TV would? Basically, I don't want to spend $100 on Apple TV, and if this will do the job with just as good picture quality, I'll buy it. Thanks.
