iPhone Vibration/Alert sound even when phone unlocked?

My phone is set to vibrate on Silent. When I'm actively using the phone, and a Message comes in, it vibrates as it displays the banner alert. The only time It doesn't vibrate is when I have the active Message thread open (and so no alert is displayed).

I don't understand why it vibrates when unlocked... I see the banner when a message comes in; I don't need the phone vibrating in my hand, as well. This is irritating when I'm browsing the Web and carrying on a busy conversation at the same time.

Any way to tweak this, other than turning off "Vibrate on Silent" (and remembering to turn back on again afterward)? Thanks.

[Btw: The same issue applies when the phone is *not* on Silent -- the Alert Tone plays (in addition to the vibration) when a message comes in and the phone is unlocked. I don't need the tone; that's what the banner's for!]

There's no way to change that behavior. The reason for it is what if your screen is on and you're not actively using the phone at the time you would miss notifications.

Have you tried to turn off " Vibrate when ring" setting?
