Does having a better video card increase overall speed of a mac? I thought it was just the video and screen effects, but benchmark tests show machines with different cards and identical other specs performing different in all the performance tests.
 
In recent versions of OS X (10.2 and 10.3) yes. All of the windows you see on screen are Open GL textures being composited onto screen by the graphics hardware. Better hardware does it faster.
