is there a chat client out there other than iChat that can do video chat on the mac?
i am currently using Adium and even though it periodically skips some messages in my convos, it does rock!
but i have to switch over to msn on my pc if i want to see a friend over their webcam and it pisses me off!
is there another program that can do video chat on the mac?

i was going to recommend adium, theres aim for mac, msn for mac, yahoo for mac, and paltalk (does all of them)

yeah, adium doesn't have video chat, neither does msn for mac.
i need something that works with msn, cause that's what i use to chat, through Adium.
paltalk seems to be for windows...
i basically need a lightweight (got a powerbook so i don't want it to take up all my resources just for chatting) client that can log on to msn and that supports video chat...

found one, had used it before and i forgot...

aMSN

does the job, video chat works, tried with a mate,
but it's heavy and a bit buggy...

anything lighter out there?

Unfortunately unless you use a Windows native application other than aMSN (which is buggy and clunky) there's not any other choice to video chat with MSN users. It's because if that the built in iSight here in Australia is virtually useless unless you have Windows installed in Bootcamp.

I use Parallel's Desktop virtualizing Windows XP (in Coherence mode) and running MSN Messneger that way to use webcams.

Works perfect and I don't have to restart my Mac or whatever.

I'd much rather M$ would hurry up and release a new version of MSN Messenger:Mac that has webcam support.

Either that or if iChat supported MSN servers.

I use skype as well. The sound quality on it is superb compared to ichat. And its free, so thats another plus.

I've always had problems with the sound in Skype - terrible feedback noises, lots of 'ringing' sounds as though there are elves and sleighbells in the background!

Ya I've also noticed this. But it only happens when the speaker volume is high, skype picks up sounds so much better than ichat, i can sit next to the TV and the person can still understand me, try that with ichat, plus you dont need to yell.

I attribute the "bells" ringing to the fact that the macbooks speakers are behind the hinges and the sounds reflects off of the monitor directly to the microphone. Hence the feedback. Turing the speakers down a bit helps and almost cures the problem. To get rid of it completely, use headphones:D

I've found that as well such that:

video image quality: iChat > Skype
sound quality during: Skype > iChat
