hi,

i finally put the mac mini 1.42 with 1gb ram through its paces. i had a dvd i created via my camcorder footage. i took this dvd and decided to compress it to fit on a cd and/or to a smaller size.

(dvd had 2 hours of holiday footage with a lot of varying scenes)

i used handbrake to first convert the footage to fit on on a cd for a family member via mpeg4 compression (700mb). it took 3 1/2 hours to convert via one pass at an average of 15/16 fps. i was quite pleased with the outcome but it were a bit pixelated and blocky in parts when enlarged.

i then decided to compress via h264. this took 12 1/2 hours to compress at an average of 4.5 fps. the end outcome was very good and way better than mpeg4.

i would like to know how good these compression results are for a mac mini?
what sort of times and fps are others getting?
what sort of times/fps are people getting using a g5 imac/dual powermac etc?

also listing other encoding/compression/dvd authoring related video tasks with times and fps would be great to get a more better idea on what the different machines are capable of in a real work situation.

the reason i ask is that i am thinking of doing a variety of intensive tasks and may sell my current machine sooner rather than later to fund a more powerful one.

note: 100% cpu usage / 345mb ram used / 679mb ram free and couldn't really do much else lol

thanks,
