Video Formats on iPhone

What video formats are included on the iPhone? I cannot seem to get any of my movies or TV shows to transfer to the device. They have an assortment of codecs (audio and visual). Would there be some program to convert them from their various formats to one the iPhone (and iTunes) would recognize?
