Ok, I left the title general to try and get people in here who would normally yell at me to use the search function, but I am looking for specific info that I have not been unable to find.
I am about to start production on a high end automotive series and am considering my editing machine which is a 4,1(specs below). The media I’m capturing is 4k dci in either prores HQ or 422 with the occasional possibility of prores raw(my nle causes issues here) and CinemaDNG raw in 24 and 60fps, and the occasional 2k up to 240/480fps.
I edit in Davinci resolve studio.
My current productions, up to this point have been 1080p with semi heavy grades, but nothing too intensive, but now with the quality increase, I’m considering my machines abilities. What are some of your real-world experiences with a 4,1/5,1 and prores 4K dci
My current setup is a 4,1 flashed to 5,1. My production drive is a 2tb nvme with my media storage drives being 4x800gb ssd’s raided together. Cpu is x5690 and 48gb of memory. GPU is a rx580(no opencore for acceleration currently).
I have been playing with clips and have found that a single, or even two layers of 4K/24dci plays back without issue with basic grades(log to 709 on an aces timeline).
My primary concern right now is that while there are newer machines out there, my current pac pro has been extremely reliable and my workflow is in place. I could upgrade it to a dual x5690 setup and upgrade the memory to 96gb and the gpu to something newer if needed, but the concern is would it be advisable to “upgrade” to something like the m1 mac mini(once the m1 max version is released)? The 7,1 Mac Pro is out for the sheer prices right now, and I could built a pc, but I’d rather stick with macOS. Is anyone still using their 4/5,1 in a production environment?
