In the last few days my Apple TV 4K has developed this issue. After roughly 20 mins of play the screen freezes but the audio continues. Apple of course said to do the regular things(reset, sign out etc) and then told me that it was my HDMI cable. It's been the same cable for the last 2 years. Nothing has changed about my set up. Nothing.

Strangely it's only with Disney titles.

Anyone else having this issue?

You didn't say what app is playing the movies and where they are stored, if relevant. iTunes or Vudu purchased movies, media server?

Oh sorry Just regular ol’ iTunes movies purchased and streamed through the TV app.

Cable troubleshooting is sometimes inconsistent, even when it doesn't seem like a cable problem..

I've had "unable to play content" only when viewing Stan content here in Australia on AppleTV, but the moment i viewed ITunes on same setup, it was fine..

I replaced HDMI cable and problem solved. No idea why it work work o some but not others.. as HDCP is HDCP.. whichever way you look at it..

Either it works, or doesn't... but also a flaky cable can be a flaky cable.. The only way to know is replace and see. Try playing it on iTunes on Mac and see if same issue. If its bandwidth issue, it would be problem there as well.

I did run the HDMI check and it’s fine. Speed test as well. I’m really hesitant to change the cable for two reasons: A) it’s worked perfectly for years and B) the one Apple suggested is the exact one I’m using.

I didn’t play an offending movie on a different device though; that’s a good idea. I’ll try and report back. I was able to watch a 3 hour movie to completion last night with no issues but then mins into another movie it did the same thing. Again, and it could be a coincidence, it was a Disney(Marvel) movie.

Just noticed this also, audio of a movie keeps going until another app is opened - might be different - ATV did not freeze

Yes, when this happens I have full control over the Apple TV. Just the video of the movie stops while the audio continues, even if I scrub to different parts that same image stays on screen but the audio will jump to appropriate spot.

OK so I played one of the offending movies on three other devices: iMac, iPhone and iPad. It didn't have any issues on any of the devices. The movies continue to freeze(video) after 18 mins exactly(I timed it)

I ran to Walmart and got a 4K certified HDMI cable(even though I was using the one Apple sells and I really didn't want to spend the money)....same thing.

The only doing it on Disney movies could be a coincidence. I have almost 600 titles but other non-disney titles I've played since this started run through fine.

I’ve been experiencing the same issue lately. When I’m watching movies purchased through iTunes, the movie freezes approx every 15 minutes. I can just back out of the movie and then play it again but after 15 minutes it happens again. This started recently and doesn’t happen on stuff I watch through other apps. It’s even on non HD content in iTunes. Very frustrating I hope there is a solution for it...

Just thought I'd mention that I tested this two nights ago and the same issue. I purchased US through iTunes and it was still stopping every 15 minutes. I decided to try and switch it over to VUDU and it played flawlessly. It's not just happening on Hd/4K content. I've watched some older tv shows that are non hd purchased through itunes and the same issue pops up. I hope there's a fix coming

I have experienced this also, only through the TV app, if I move over to the separate iTunes movie or tv show app. It plays fine. Seems to be a bug with the Apple TV app.

I just wanted to share that THIS did work for me. Thanks for the suggestion and anyone else experiencing this give it a try. I do hope they get the other app fixed soon I'm surprised this isn't a bigger deal. Hard to imagine it's only hitting a few lucky people.

I dread they will begin a phase out of those apps one day. I admit the purchased layout could be tweaked but they are reliable. Plus movies gives you some good recommendations and the tv has your selected favorites.
