Videos keep freezing

Over the past 48 hours or so, anytime I try to watch a video using VLC or any other player I have installed on my computer, haven't tried QuickTime, the video will play for 90 seconds and both audio and video will freeze. It stays frozen for 15 seconds or so and then continues to play where it left off, again for 90 seconds and then freezes again. I have had this issue with mp4, wmv, and avi, but not with mkv. I have not had any issues streaming videos.

I am using a mid 2012 13'' MacBook Pro.
Processor 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5
Memory 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB
Software OS X 10.9.2 (13C64)

Any ideas?

Clean Install Yosemite, and update VLC. That should do it.
