Videos not coming in from Canon PowerShot G9

Whenever I try to import video from my Canon PowerShot G9 iPhoto will just stay unresponsive. I have tried countless times to get it working, I have tried the Image Capture application and it won't work.

Any suggestions? Can I just view the camera as a normal volume in OS X without a card reader?
