iPad Viewing angle/Brightness

This is my first iPad, so I'm not sure if this is normal:

If I don't look at the iPad straight on (i.e., when I'm tilting it), the brightness decreases considerably. Is this normal?

I don't experience anything different then the iPad Air based on screen viewing angles
