I am very new to Mac, but have been trying to do this ever since i turned my MBP on. When i open Finder, i dont want the folders etc to be displayed in a grid, i want it in columns. So everytime i open Finder i have to select the columns option. Is there any way to select the columns view as default??

Click on the desktop so that it says Finder top left. Click this finder menu, go to preferences, check 'always open finder windows in column view'. Sorted.

Ive already tried that.

still opens Finder in the grid folder view

What do you mean by "Opening Finder"?

Do you mean a Finder window? Any Finder window, or particular ones?

Is it when you double-click the HD icon or when using command-N to open a new Finder window?

Ok, then... :)

Double-click the HD icon, go to column view (cmd-3), place the window where you want it and resize it to whatever size you want (important: do not click on any of the files or folders inside the window) and then close the window again (cmd-W).

Now it should open up to that configuration every time you double-click the HD (until the next time you change view/position/size and close without actually clicking any items in the window).
