Viewing photos from a backup

Hi! I am looking at buying a NAS to use as the target for my Time Machine backups. The backups will naturally contain the iPhoto library. Will it be possible to view the backed up photos somehow? Is it depending on the NAS software, or are the files locked into the backup?
