How often are there updates on Virex? I know Norton on my PC had updates at least once a week or so. But Since I got my Mac, I've only updated it once and that is when I first got it. It's been about 2 1/2 weeks.

you must be new. there are no viruses for macs at the moment. there had been a few cases of virus like files but other than that, relax. Enjoy one of the beauties of the mac platform (while it lasts).

Virex seems to update about once/month, usually around the 25th, it seems. I don't reboot too often, and so I don't usually get the update for a week or two after. That's also the reason I don't know for sure the date it comes out.

Don't sweat it. The Mac platform is excellent. You've still got to practice reasonably safe computing, but there aren't any signifigant, current threats out there.

This is a great website to check back to once in a while to see if there is a threat.

Welcome to the Mac world!

Yes I am sorta new to Macs. I've used Macs at school for a few years until recently I finally got a G5. So I'm pretty familiar with OS X, but I've owned one for about 2 1/2 weeks. I asked the guy at the Apple store if having a virus app was really necessary since Macs have almost 0 viruses. He said yea I should get a virus app because a Mac is still at risk (he compared it to PCs getting hit by a virus everday and a Mac once a month). So I just assume that Virex will update, just not nearly as much as Norton for the PC. :)

Virex will update about once per month. Of course, Its hard to know if these are just updates for the sake of it or really adding anything to the app.

You were told this at an Apple retail store? Wow, Steve Jobs wouldn't be too thrilled with his employees giving out blatant misinformation like that. For the record, OS X has never had a single virus in it's history, so for him to say it gets hit by a virus once a month is pure bull.

Geez, you'd think at least Apple store employees would know this. I can see it happening at Comp USA (I once witnessed an employee there insisting to a customer that the problem they had with their Mac at home must be due to a virus), but it should never happen at an Apple Store...

I guess he meant that Macs are at risk, but the risk is VERY small compared to PCs. So although the risk is VERY small, the risk is there. And I asked him about spyware and he said that Macs do have spyware? Probably a VERY small amount, but they do have it. Is that true? Does OS X have any type of spyware? (even if it is a VERY small amount)

Yeah, that was pretty irresponsible of him to make that analogy... everyday v. once a month. Comparing the two is more like apples and lemons, uh, I mean oranges...

Don't worry about the virus issue and Virex will update occasionally, but not really sure what we are being protected against!
