My wife's boss gave her an iPhone 2G that she has never even activated. I ran it through iTunes, which of course wanted me to activate it with AT&T. I want to unlock it so I can use it with Claro PR. I tried a tutorial on how to update to 3.1.2 but it gave me error 1604. I cant even get the phone in iTunes to be recognized so I dont know which firmware it has! Can someone help me unlock/jailbreak this thing?

anyway can you check the version by general > setting > about > version?
then download pwnage if mac or redsnow if pc. jailbreak using 3.1.2

I cant check the settings because the phone is stuck in the "Lets Activate iPhone" screen on iTunes, and on the phone there is the USB to iTunes picture, and thats it.

I was able to upgrade to a stock 3.1.2, shall I downgrade to 3.0, unlock and then upgrade back to 3.1.2 and THEN jailbreak with blackra1n?

I was able to unlock/jailbreak. Here's what I did.

Downloaded 2G 3.1.2 official firmware.
Updated w/ iTunes to 3.1.2.
Jailbroke w/ blackra1n.
Downloaded Bootneuter from Cydia.
Ran Bootneuter.
Unlocked the virgin 2G to 3.1.2.
Tested w/ T-Mobile SIM card and worked beautifully. :)
