Virtual/Background login

Recently upgraded both my iMac and my Mini to Mountain Lion and Mountain Lion server, respectively, from Lion and Lion server. I use my Mini typically as a media server, but like to login in the background to do various tasks. With Lion it always prompted me if I wanted the main screen or the background/virtual screen. With Mountain Lion i don't get prompted and it just brings up the desktop. I've been searching and can't find how to change this.

Anyone else run into it?
