Virtual Machine Disc Space

I'm running Windows XP Service Pack 3 using VM Fusion. I allocated 20GB of hard drive but when I run Disk Inventory it shows 35GB. In Windows Explorer disc space is shown as 20GB with 14 GB free. How can I reduce the size VM is taking up?
