can you use any version of windows XP? or will it only work with a specific version?

Probably not MCE, but all others should work. Home/Pro SP 1/2. If there are more, I don't know. 2000 also works if i remember right.

VPC should support just about any PC operating system, including DOS, Linux, and Windows 95/98/2000/XP. I use Windows 2000, Linux and FreeDOS with VPC 7.0.1 and they all work fine.

VPC took my copy of Media Center(from Gateway PC) fine, not sure if it gives me the Media Center abilitys but it boots into Windows fine

You can use any version, although VPC "additions" cannot be installed with Win95 - this addition allows better integration with VPC and OS X (like better cursor control between the 2).

Many people (including me) recommend using W2K, as it tends to run better than XP. If you do use XP, trying turning off all of the effects (especially graphics effects) so that it runs smoother.
