VirtualBox and Debian

I have installed VirtualBox on my new MacBook Pro. I tried to install Windows XP and Debian Linux. But I get an error message like:

Input/output error during read on /dev/ide/host2/bus0/target1/lun0/disc (on Debian)

or some like:

there no Disk to write (on Windows)

.
I don't know, but I think I must read the VirtualBox manual... or have anyone an idea?
