VirtualPC USB OneTouch connection difficultes

when the new Maxtor OneTouch 300 GB external HD (FireWire & USB) was connected to Virtual PC (Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional/Windows XP), the disk was recognized for a moment, and then turned off from the USB Settings list.
